The 1909 Wright Military Flyer is the world's first military airplane. It was designed by the Wright brothers and purchased by the U.S. Army for $30,000. Wilbur Wright trained the first military pilots to fly this airplane in nearby College Park, Maryland. The Army gave the airplane to the Smithsonian in 1911.
