SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
The Lockheed Vega 5C "Winnie Mae" is the first airplane to fly twice around the world. Piloted by Wiley Post, the "Winnie Mae" made its first round-the-world flight in 1931, with Harold Gatty as navigator. Flying alone, Post made his second round the-world flight in 1933. Later Post flew the plane on a number of pioneering altitude and distance flights in the substratosphere.
